Ornellaia is one of the most decorated, adored, and delicious "Super Tuscan" wines. The wine contains mostly cabernet sauvignon, but it also contains merlot, cab franc and petit verdot. The wine makers at Ornellaia seem to have been dialing down the amount of cabernet sauvignon over the past 15-20 years and increasing the concentration of the other grapes. Whereas cabernet made up 60 or even close to 80% of a bottle in the 90's and early 00s, the 2014 vintage contained 34% cab, 32% merlot, 20% petit verdot, and 14% cab franc. In 2015, the winery pushed cab back up to 53% of the mixture. It's fun to look through the years and read about the growing conditions, reviews and grape mixes.
Ornellaia is often found in the excellent company of other revered Super Tuscans - Solaia, Sassicaia and Tignanello.
According to our friends at ILoveWine.com, dryer wines like Merlots, are lower in carbohydrates. So, if you are watching your carb intake, but love great wine like we do, then a dry may be a good choice for you. See more about wines and carbs via the last link below to their article below.
